Spring is the perfect time to freshen up your living spaces after the long winter months. Annual spring cleaning gives both you and your home a nice reset, setting you up for success as you enter the exciting and busy months ahead.
Based on advice our M/I Homes homeowners have shared about how they clean their own new homes, we’ve compiled a comprehensive spring-cleaning checklist for you to download, print out, and hang up on your fridge to ensure that no nook or cranny is overlooked.

Room-By-Room Spring Cleaning Checklist
To give your home the best cleaning possible, be sure to prioritize each living space—from your entryway to your bedrooms and bathrooms.
1. Entryway
Your entryway is the first space you and guests see as you enter your home, so it’s important this area is not overlooked.
Take time to sweep and mop the floors, wipe down walls with a damp cloth and dish soap, disinfect door handles, and organize your shoes. Don’t forget to give your doormat some love by shaking it outside or vacuuming!
2. Kitchen
As the central room in your home and the space that gets used the most—especially if you cook meals at home—kitchens typically need more than one deep clean a year. Spring is a great time to give it the first full clean of the year if you haven’t already!
Start by cleaning all your appliances inside and out. Not only does this include your larger appliances like the microwave, refrigerator, and dishwasher, but smaller ones too, such as your coffee maker, air fryer, blender, and toaster.
Don’t forget to organize your pantry and discard expired food. Disinfect your countertops and wipe down your walls and baseboards. We also recommend freshening up your kitchen drain and/or garbage disposal since it builds up food scraps over time and can lead to funky smells.
3. Bathrooms
Although your bathrooms may not be the most enjoyable rooms to clean at home, it’s much needed.
Start out by cleaning and disinfecting your toilet, sink, and shower / bathtub. Since it’s a best practice to replace shower liner curtains every few months, now is the perfect time to do that!
If you have tile flooring, scrub the grout then mop. Lastly, be sure to organize and discard any expired personal care products and don’t forget to wipe down walls and baseboards.
4. Bedrooms
For families with young kids, educating them on how to clean their own bedrooms is a fantastic learning experience that empowers them to take ownership of their space. Try showing them first by walking them through the steps to cleaning your primary bedroom, then have them get to work on their own.
We recommend dusting bedroom furniture and blinds first and then vacuuming, sweeping, and/or mopping your floors. Wipe down your windows and baseboards. Rotate and flip over your mattress if needed.
Consider using this time to organize and clean out your closet and set aside a bag of clothes to donate to charity.
5. Living Room
Last but certainly not least is your living room and other living spaces. Start by dusting all flat surfaces like shelves, tables, and entertainment centers. Don’t forget to dust electronics with a dryer sheet, too! Then, vacuum and mop carpets, rugs, and flooring.
Spring cleaning is the ideal time to deep clean your couches and chairs. For cloth material, vacuum under each cushion and dry clean removable cushion covers if you’re able to. Pick up and organize clutter. Then, light a candle, sit back, and relax in your freshly cleaned home.
